Boosting public presidential financing

February 13th, 2007 · No Comments

Tax payers may soon have the option to give more money to the government to increase competition and fairness in the 2012 presidential campaign.

Legislation was introduced in Washington on Jan. 30 by congressmen from both sides of the aisle and seeks to strengthen the presidential public financing system to account for the modern presidential campaign.

“This legislation is a small but necessary investment to protect our democracy and preserve the integrity of our presidential elections,” said Senator Russ Feingold, D-Wis. Keep reading →

French President Jacques Chirac

With his presidency in the home stretch, Chirac plays both sides of the Iranian nuclear situation.

The president’s last words are usually meant to set the record straight on his official positions. Yet, French President Jacques Chirac’s words leave the international media wondering.

Rain Rain Go Away

January 21st, 2007 · No Comments

WACO,Texas–Motorists had to keep an eye out for new potholes as road conditions continued to deteriorate Saturday, after the area received almost a half inch of rain.

“Once it absorbs water, it gets heavier, and then it starts to crack and crumble,”

Since the first of the month, the area has received four and one-third inches of rain. This is the first time in almost a year that the City of Waco is ahead of its average monthly rainfall.

Concreate Crumbles

The recent weather pattern has increased precipitation, leaving less time for the pavement to dry, causing it to crack—and potholes to form.

The increase in rainfall has also lead to problems for structural engineers across the county, as concrete structures have become saturated with water.

“Once it absorbs water, it gets heavier, and then it starts to crack and crumble,” said Rick Templeton, an engineer with Rogers O’Brien.

No reports have been filed with the city that mention any major structural damage to concrete resulting from over absorption.

Officials at Baylor University have blocked off the top floor of their Fifth street parking facility to reduce the amount of weight that the structure supports. The MoJo’s calls inquiring about the parking facility went unreturned Friday.

WACO,Texas–Baylor University officials decided first, to delay classes, then later decided to close the campus.

Concern was raised as sleet began falling at 9 p.m., and did not end until 9 a.m. As the temperature fell bridges, cars and roads acquired significant accumulations of ice and, in some areas, snow.

A source within the administration told the MoJos that even though 80% of the students live within walking distance of campus, a great number of faculty and staff live outside of Waco. Not wanting to risk harm to the commuters, the administration decided to cancel classes altogether.

“Man, why couldn’t they email us? I figured if they’d post it on the net– they’d email us,” said Baylor senior Emmanuel Rosco.
